The town was founded by James Grifford in 1847. After settling in Grafton, Grifford soon began selling cords of wood and steamships. He then built a 1000 foot wooden pier for ships to dock in Lake Michigan. He also built a chute that would lay down the side of a steep bluff for log transportation.
Grifford built a plank road after he was granted a charter by the territorial legislature. The road was only three miles long but it was the start of today's Highway 60, which led to more development in Grafton real estate.
