West Bend Wisconsin is located about 45 minutes or 40 miles Northwest of Milwaukee and about 30 minutes or 17 miles West of Port Washington which is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. West Bend is home to about 31, medical 000 residents but is spread out among neighborhoods and communities in Washington County. Most residents of West Bend work either in town or in neighboring communities and the city’s economic threshold has been historically based in financial services and manufacturing. The West Bend Mutual Insurance Company was founded in West Bend in 1894 as are many manufacturing companies and savings-and-loan banks. Our strong economy has led us to be the only city in the United States that did not enter the Great Depression around the 1930s.
Our community is served by the West Bend school district which includes six elementary schools, and two middle schools and two high schools — the West Bend East high school and the West Bend West high school. Although they share the same campus, they are technically separate schools. We also have a number of private schools as well as the University of Wisconsin – Washington County and the Moraine Park technical college.
Our vibrant community is one full of outdoor recreation and activities with Riverwalk trails that wind along the banks of the Milwaukee River. We are also home to several parks which are great for hiking, sports, and even offer a community swimming pond with the beach, fishing capabilities and sports fields. The Quaas Creek Park is home to scenic bike trails, a canoe launch, sports fields, concession stands and children’s playground.
The downtown area features many boutiques, specialty shops, and retail outlets as well as a collection of historical building, restaurants and pubs. We also have Wisconsin’s first indoor go cart track, a fabulous family-orientated ice-skating rink, coffee shops, entertainment and theaters, and the Museum of Wisconsin art.
Each year we celebrate the Maxwell Street days, which is the celebration of local vendors and blues music. Dozens of local vendors and shops offer great deals and specials out the sidewalks in front of their stores. This is a great event for 3 to 4 days of endless shopping and this year you can enjoy local vendors, music, Street food and more. We also celebrate German fast took knowledge of local and seasonal heritages. The Seafood Festival is held the first weekend in June, and we have fantastic farmers markets every Saturday in downtown West Bend during the summer time. Photo courtesy of Fox6Now.com
